The first step should be to change your password immediately. 

Note: This is only possible if the hacker has not changed your password after hacking your account.

In case if your password is changed by a hacker, the next step is to try to restore the password using the “Forgot password”. 

Note: This is only possible if the hacker didn’t change your email address in your account.

In case if your email address is changed by hacker, let your friends know that your account is hacked and ask them to not open any links shared via the compromised account.

In case, if you are using the same password that got compromised in any other services such as email, online banking etc, immediately change that password.

Report to the social media site that your account got compromised and they will help you to restore your account.

Finally if your account was misused by the hacker, you can report to the cybercrime police.

How to protect yourself from social media hackers?

To secure your information on social media from hackers and attackers, consider the listed points:

Create unique passwords: Ensure that the passwords for each social media account are unique.

Enable two-factor authentication: The 2FA tools usually send passcode to your mobile phone as a secondary authentication mechanism.

Track unusual activities: Set up the email notification option in your account so that you receive alerts when there are unusual or suspicious browsing activities, such as logging to your account from a new location or failed password attempts.

Check URL: Before you login to social media account, make sure you access the correct URL (SSL).

Regular check: Even if you are not actively using your social media account, make sure to regularly login and check your account for any unusual activity.

Report hacking: If you feel or identify that your account is hacked, use the Report option in the Social media website to report hacking.

Report to police: If the hacker starts misusing or compromising your account information, immediately report it to the police.
