How to secure your web browser?

As Internet users, we all use web browsers, such as the Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome. Therefore, you need to be aware of security threats associated with web browsers and steps on how to secure your web browser. 

Most browsers are inbuilt with security features. However, if you do not correctly configure these security features, you may become vulnerable to security breach. Additionally, some of the web browsers may be vulnerable to attacks because the associated third-party plugins and extensions can also make your browser vulnerable to attacks. Another common method of browser attack is manipulation of the search settings in the browser to redirect your search requests to malicious locations. However, most of the reputed web browsers usually warn you while installing insecure plugins and extensions. 


The primary objective of an attacker in breaching the browser security is to collect information without your knowledge for marketing, tracking or analytical requirements and also for displaying pop-up advertisements.

Few ways to secure your web browser

Use the latest web browser: Ensure that you use the latest version of the web browser and regularly update your browser.

Change passwords: Ensure that you change any password that you have used on a public computer.

Keep watch of shadowing: Beware of shadowing by strangers. If you notice someone shadowing, ensure that you do not perform any browsing activities.

Private/Incognito mode: Use private or incognito mode while browsing to avoid.

    • Most of the steps mentioned in the article are applicable to mobile devices. Since the size of the mobile device is small, you should be extra cautious when you open any link (either shared with you in chat/messenger or while accessing any website). If you notice any file getting downloaded, don’t open it. Better to run a virus scan using the antivirus software in the mobile device.
